Up For The Fight: How To Advocate For Yourself As You Battle Cancer with Bill C. Potts (Episode #126)

Bill C. PottsDr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Bill C. Potts, a business leader, entrepreneur, father of three, healthcare consultant, cancer mentor, five-time cancer survivor and author of “Up for the Fight. How to Advocate for Yourself as You Battle Cancer.” Bill talks about his story as a 5-time cancer survivor – currently working on number 6 with the priority of helping others. His inspiring book serves as a guide and a framework, like a “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” but for cancer. Bill knew that his book would change lives, but he didn’t expect that it would save lives, too. Bill also talked about diet for cancer patients, how he spends more on experiences and not stuff, and counseling cancer patients about their relationships. He also touched on the power of hope and the importance of faith. Yet while cancer is a part of Bill and it surely shaped him, cancer is not who he is.

About Bill C. Potts:

My mission is to turn my cancer pain into purpose and help others navigate the cancer journey – doing this through the book, mentoring cancer patients and their families, as well as health care consulting.  Growing up in Texas, I played the trombone in the University of Texas Longhorn Band before heading to Tulane University for my MBA. I was a C-level marketing executive and, with my wife, also owned a Massage Envy and European Wax Center.  Mayo Clinic suggested I write a book, like “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” but for cancer.  The book is changing and saving lives.  MD Anderson, the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation have all endorsed it.  The book is available worldwide wherever books are sold.

“It’s not about me. It’s not about my story. It’s about what I’ve learned and the goal is pretty simple: and that is to help at least one cancer patient through their journey. I got that before the book came out. A friend reached out and said ‘Hey Bill. I’ve got a friend going through cancer treatment but he gave up and he doesn’t want to fight anymore. I was wondering if you could send him your book.’ I got a problem with it. It’s not published yet. It’s written but it’s not published. But I’ll send it to you. I sent it to him and he called me back and said, ‘Hey Bill. He read your book and he’s gonna continue his fight. He’s decided not to give up. He’s inspired by you.’ He’s still around and he’s still fighting and it’s amazing. So we had the one before the book came out.” – Bill C. Potts
