Ayurveda: A 5,000-Year-Old Approach to Wellness
Ayurveda is more than a system of medicine—it’s a way of life rooted in prevention, longevity, and health optimization. In her book, Shivani shares key Ayurvedic principles, including the six pillars of health, elemental design, circadian rhythms, gut health, nutrition, self-care rituals, and the powerful benefits of herbs and spices.
When Inflammation Affects the Mind
Inflammation isn’t only physical. Shivani explains how mental and gut inflammation can contribute to brain fog, difficulty focusing, overwhelm, and feeling disconnected from ourselves. Because the gut and brain are deeply connected, an imbalance in one can affect the other, creating a cycle of inflammation throughout the body.
Shivani’s Journey to Ayurveda
Shivani’s Ayurveda journey began in 2001 when she was diagnosed with leaky gut after taking numerous antibiotics for being a sickly child. Instead of accepting a long list of medications, she explored Ayurvedic approaches and experienced profound results. Inspired by that transformation, she made it her mission to study Ayurveda, earning a master’s degree in the field and later a PhD focused on turmeric.
Creating Rhythm Through Ayurvedic Rituals
One of Ayurveda’s central concepts is Dinacharya—daily self-care practices designed to align us with our natural circadian rhythm. Shivani shares simple rituals such as waking with the sun, hydration, tongue scraping, oil pulling, meditation, breathwork, stretching, and evening self-massage. These practices are about creating a sense of ease and learning to flow with the natural rhythms of life.
The Power of Turmeric
As a turmeric researcher, Shivani also explores the benefits of curcumin, turmeric’s powerful compound known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. She explains how turmeric can support brain health and overall wellness, and why combining it with black pepper and healthy fat can improve absorption.
Shivani also introduces the concept of “inflammaging”—the idea that chronic inflammation can contribute to many symptoms people commonly associate with aging, including joint discomfort, fatigue, brain fog, and digestive issues.
Simple Ways to Find More Peace
Shivani offers practical ways to reconnect with yourself throughout the day. Try a circadian walk outdoors, take a moment for “tea time is me time,” or simply pause your car somewhere peaceful and allow yourself to be present in nature.
These small moments can help calm the nervous system, create space for reflection, and reconnect us with our intuition.
Ayurveda as a Way of Life
Ultimately, Shivani reminds us that Ayurveda is about more than treating illness—it’s about learning how to live in a way that supports vitality, balance, and connection. We are meant to feel healthy, energized, and fully alive.
