Steve Seidel’s Journey: From Industrial Engineer to Connection Engineer
Steve shares his remarkable personal journey, beginning with his childhood as a product of divorce and his early career as an Industrial Engineer. Although successful professionally, he eventually realized that his true passion lay in connecting with people. His path led him into acting, entrepreneurship, and ultimately to becoming what he now calls a “Connection Engineer”—someone dedicated to helping individuals and organizations build stronger, more meaningful relationships.
Finding Strength Through Life’s Greatest Challenges
Steve reflects on one of the most difficult periods of his life: losing his mother while simultaneously running a business, raising his daughters, relocating, and navigating the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences reinforced the importance of community, resilience, and leaning on others during life’s toughest moments.
Building Safe Spaces for Authentic Conversations
Out of the isolation brought on by the pandemic, Steve created Gents Journey, a virtual men’s group designed to provide a safe, supportive environment where friends could openly connect, share experiences, and grow together. The group demonstrates how intentional spaces for vulnerability can strengthen both personal and professional relationships.
Living with GRIT
One of Steve’s core philosophies centers around GRIT, which stands for: Gratitude, Resilience, Integrity and Trust.
Rather than viewing challenges as obstacles, Steve encourages embracing them as opportunities for growth. These four values serve as guiding principles for building stronger relationships and leading with authenticity.
Starting Each Day with Purpose
Steve emphasizes the importance of creating intentional morning routines that prioritize connection before distractions take over. Borrowing from Steve’s friend, he said, “Take a slice of your morning pie.” By dedicating time each morning to personal growth, gratitude, and meaningful connections, people can set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
The “Fries at the Bottom of the Bag”
One of the episode’s most touching moments comes as Steve shares the story of “Fries at the Bottom of the Bag,” a deeply personal experience that helped him feel connected to his late mother after her passing. The story serves as a reminder that love, connection, and meaningful memories are right there, at the bottom of the bag.
Bringing Humanity Back into Business
Steve believes businesses should focus on more than profits. He discusses helping organizations incorporate charitable initiatives into their business models, creating a true win-win-win situation that benefits the company, its customers, and the community.
Steve introduces his 4M Framework, a roadmap for inspiring people to believe in your mission so deeply that it creates momentum beyond yourself: Mission, Messaging, Media and Movement. Rather than simply building a business, Steve encourages leaders to build communities around meaningful ideas.
Steve expands on another memorable framework, redefining what it means to become GREAT: Grateful, Reflective, Empathetic, Accountable and Transformational. These qualities help individuals grow personally while positively influencing those around them.
Investing in What Lights You Up
Steve shares how joining Meditation Hill Sangha, a community led by former Philadelphia 76ers owner Pat Croce, reinforced the importance of pursuing activities that bring genuine joy. Instead of constantly chasing happiness, he encourages people to live from happiness by regularly investing time in the people, passions, and experiences that energize them.
The Three C’s of Clutch Coffee
Using the success story of Clutch Coffee as an example, Steve highlights three essential ingredients for creating lasting customer loyalty: Community, Culture and Customer. Strong businesses, he explains, are built on meaningful relationships rather than transactions alone.
Human Connection in an Increasingly Digital World
As technology and artificial intelligence continue to evolve, Steve acknowledges that many people are experiencing greater social anxiety and disconnection. While AI can enhance productivity, it can never replace authentic human experiences, personal stories, and emotional connection. Steve encourages listeners to reconnect with their purpose, calling, and the unique life experiences only they can share.
The Power of Writing and Meaningful Conversations
Steve emphasizes writing ideas down as a powerful tool for self-discovery and growth. He also introduces The Journey Deck, a collection of conversation prompts designed to help people quickly create authentic connections at networking events, team meetings, and social gatherings.
Having Fun Along the Journey
Dr. Lynn and Steve remind listeners that growth doesn’t have to be serious all the time. “If it’s fun, it gets done.” Approaching life with curiosity, playfulness, and joy helps people stay motivated while strengthening relationships.
Elevating Yourself Every Day
Steve shares one of his favorite life philosophies: invest in the things that separate you from the ground. Whether it’s quality shoes, reliable tires, or a supportive mattress, making thoughtful investments in everyday essentials ultimately supports your health, well-being, and long-term success.
Sharing Your Message with the World
Through The Seidel Agency, Steve helps individuals and organizations clarify their messaging, establish authority, and share their stories more effectively. He also offers free downloadable resources that help people better define their purpose and communicate their value.
Final Takeaway
Steve closes the conversation by returning to the principles of GRIT. Life will always present challenges, but every obstacle provides an opportunity to grow stronger, step outside your comfort zone, and continue moving forward. Like navigating an obstacle course, persistence, resilience, and authentic connection ultimately lead to the finish line.
This episode serves as a powerful reminder that while technology continues to evolve, our greatest strength will always be our ability to genuinely connect with one another. We all have the power to engineer connection.
ABOUT Steve Seidel:
Steve Seidel is a Connection Engineer — a trained Industrial Engineer from Penn State who spent 30 years discovering that the most complex system he’d ever work on wasn’t a manufacturing floor. It was human connection.
Raised in Philadelphia by a lineage of extraordinary women — including a great-grandmother who sur-vived Ellis Island with nothing but the courage to walk toward a stranger — Steve grew up under-standing that connection isn’t a soft skill. It’s a survival skill.
After being laid off from Motorola in 2003, he moved to New York City to pursue acting, trained at UCB Improv, worked as a casting director, produced the first-ever Comedy Livestream on YouTube in 2011, and eventually founded The Seidel Agency — an award-winning PR and media firm that has driven $20M+ in revenue for 150+ clients and guided three companies to acquisition.
He gave a TEDx talk at the University of Kentucky called The Hidden Power of Grief, co-founded Gents Journey — a men’s collective built on vulnerability and growth — and created The Journey Deck: 52 questions born from losing his mother that help people connect at a deeper level.
His proprietary framework, Connection Engineering, helps leaders, founders, HR teams, and speakers close the gap between who they are and how they’re experienced — and turn the stories they’ve been sitting on into their greatest competitive advantage.
Steve is a Girl Dad to Savannah and Sawyer, a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan, and the producer of Wolves Among Us — a #1 podcast sold to Universal TV and Peacock with Colin Jost attached.
His philosophy is simple: The best things in life are at the bottom of the bag — including you.
