In this powerful conversation, Dr. Lynn Hellerstein speaks with Glenn Sturm, bestselling author, astrophotographer, and 18 years on chemo and counting, as he talks about his 18-year journey on chemotherapy and having a multidisciplinary cancer care team that makes a difference in patients’ mortality and quality of life. Glenn’s story is grounded in deeply held personal values: “Sturms never quit.” He shares how he approaches life with determination—pursuing his passions fully, striving to improve constantly, and making it a point to bring a smile to others every day. Humor and resilience are not just coping mechanisms for him; they are guiding principles. Most importantly, he refuses to let cancer define who he is.

The Power of a Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Team
A major focus of the episode is the life-changing impact of a multidisciplinary cancer care team. Glenn explains how moving from a single-doctor model to a team of integrated specialists can dramatically improve outcomes.
This approach brings together oncologists, psychiatrists, clinical trial coordinators, research nurses, tumor registrars, and even computational oncologists to collaborate on patient care. Rather than isolated decisions, treatment plans are built on consensus—with the patient actively involved.
The results are striking: reduced mortality rates (by as much as 90%) and significantly improved quality of life.
Patient-Centered, Not Doctor-Centered Care
Glenn emphasizes the importance of shifting from doctor-centered to patient-centered medicine. In a multidisciplinary setup, patients are not passive recipients—they are key participants in decision-making.
He also highlights the need for a strong team leader and a reliable navigator who can help patients manage the growing complexity of their care team. This structure ensures that every aspect of treatment is coordinated and aligned with the patient’s needs.
Managing the Realities of Cancer Treatment
The conversation also explores the day-to-day realities of living with cancer. Glenn discusses cancer fatigue syndrome, one of the most common side effects patients experience, and the importance of addressing it with proper support—including psychiatric care when needed.
He shares practical insights, such as using ginger drops to help reduce nausea and restore energy, and highlights complementary therapies like acupuncture and massage as part of a holistic care plan.
From 2.5 Years to 30
One of the most powerful aspects of Glenn’s story is his prognosis. Initially given just 2.5 years to live, he is now looking at 30 years. He attributes this extraordinary extension not only to medical treatment but to the multidisciplinary approach and his willingness to advocate for it. His experience underscores the importance of educating oneself and actively seeking out comprehensive care teams.
Barriers and the Need for Awareness
Despite its benefits, multidisciplinary care is not yet the norm everywhere. Glenn discusses the barriers—particularly insurance challenges and resistance from some healthcare providers.
While countries like Australia have embraced this model for decades, adoption in other regions has been slower. This gap is what inspired Glenn to write his book and spread awareness, encouraging patients to ask for multidisciplinary care when diagnosed.
A Broader Life Philosophy
Beyond healthcare, Glenn shares a philosophy that applies to life as a whole: foster an environment where there is a conflict of ideas without conflict of personalities. Glenn’s mission is to raise awareness and encourage patients to seek better, more collaborative care through his books Warrior Hate War, Cancer Set Me Free and his upcoming work More Than Hope.
