Visual Learning – Be an Effective Speaker!

Many thanks to Thomas and Amee Lacoq for their excellent LaCoq Practice Development Workshop, “More Patients Breakthrough Course in Plano, Texas.  This course is designed to teach optometrists and their staff how to effectively communicate with parents and educators about the importance of visual learning for academic success.

Highlights included:

  • Very specific ways to communicate and demonstrate to parents and educators on the importance of visual learning (more than 20/20).  Vision problems can impact children’s learning, attention and performance.   This includes children diagnosed or mis-diagnosed with ADHD/ADD or those children with reading and writing difficulties
  • 3 ways of how kids respond to visual stress:
  1. Physical changes in their eyes
  2. Forcing themselves to do the work but with reduced comprehension or performance
  3. Avoidance of near work, like the “Homework War” – the battle to do homework
  • Once these kids are identified, how to discuss the effective vision solutions to create successful students and confident kids.

This Practice Development Workshop was personally and professionaly quite valuable.  I’ve been speaking and treating kids with visual learning problems for more than 30 years, yet there continues to be a great need to inform the public about the visual learning problem.  One out of 4 school age children (Prevent Blindness) many kids are suffering because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Clear communications and discussions need to be consistent, starting in our developmental optometry offices… from the first phone call, through the entire evaluation and consultation.  Bottom line… help more children get the vision help they so badly need to improve their school success, sports and confidence.

Thanks, Thomas and Amee for the opportunity and excellent workshop!  My gratitude to Dr. Charles Shidlofsky for his generosity in sharing his office for the workshop.
